The Wedding reception began at 7 pm this evening, so we needed to leave early for the Taj Majal since it would be at least a 4 hour drive each way. In reality, it ended up being 4 hours there and 5 hours on the return.
This was our first tour led by the Indian tour company I organized from home. After completing some paper work, we headed out for the Taj Majal / Agra Fort due south of New Delhi. Navigating through the city was truly challenging as our well trained driver zigged and zagged through another cacophony of people, vehicles and animals in deafening noice, constant honking and congestion like nothing any of you could ever imagine. And I thought Los Angeles was congested? I longed for a leisurely Thursday afternoon rush hour drive south on the 405 Fwy with an overturned truck blocking several lanes. At least people actually drive inside their lanes a few feet of clearance space and actually observe the traffic laws.
But our driver assured us that this was somewhat lighter traffic since it was early Saturday morning. Compared to the ride home, he was right, but more on that later.
After our 4 hour drive to reach the Taj Majal, our first glimpse was breathtaking. I was actually standing in front of this 7th Wonder of the Modern World. While Stan and Lauren each saw the Taj once before, you cannot escape the powerful impact this monument has in person.
Our guide at the Taj provided the fascinating historical background. This solid white marble edifice about 25 stories high was constructed as desired by the royal Muslim leader, Shah Jahan over 22 years in the 17th century -- completed in around 1648. Built as a mausoleum for his wife, the surrounding grounds and structures provided an appreciation of what man can achieve with enough power and wealth.
Before heading to the Agra Fort, we stopped for lunch at a McDonald's -- not a place we frequent in LA, but we had to try it Indian style where beef products are not served. You are left with chicken, fish and veegie burgers. The veggie burger halfway around the world was surprisingly tasty and a fun experience in this holy place.
